APS MYSTERY BLACK CHINENSE - The Enigmatic Dark

**Basic Info**

Species: *Capsicum chinense* (likely)

Origin: Atlantic Pepper Seeds (APS) - unknown variant

Heat: Unknown (likely hot to superhot, estimated)

Type: Mysterious black-colored variety

**Story**

The APS Mystery Black Chinense is one of the most intriguing entries in the APS catalog - a pepper of unknown lineage that produces strikingly dark, almost black pods. The 'Mystery' designation reflects the unknown genetic background of this variety, which may represent a natural mutation, an experimental cross, or a rare heirloom that has been preserved by APS.

In the world of pepper breeding, black or very dark purple pods are relatively rare and often indicate the presence of anthocyanin pigments - the same compounds that give blueberries and blackberries their color. In peppers, these pigments can develop alongside capsaicin, potentially creating varieties with both extreme heat and unique visual appeal.

The 'chinense' designation suggests this variety belongs to the *Capsicum chinense* species, which includes many of the world's most famous superhots like habaneros, ghost peppers, and Carolina Reapers. If this is the case, the heat level is likely significant, potentially ranging from hot to superhot. However, without specific data, the exact heat profile remains a mystery.

What makes this variety particularly fascinating is its visual impact. The pods likely mature through a spectrum of dark hues - from deep purple to almost black - creating a dramatic contrast against the plant's foliage. This ornamental value, combined with the potential for extreme heat, makes it a prized addition to any pepper collection.

For gardeners, the APS Mystery Black Chinense offers the thrill of growing an enigmatic variety with unknown characteristics. Each harvest may reveal new insights into its flavor, heat, and growth habits. The mystery adds an element of discovery to the growing experience, making it a favorite among adventurous gardeners and pepper enthusiasts.
