Capsicum Chinense

APS PURPLE 7-POT CROSS - The Royal Powerhouse

**Basic Info**

Species: *Capsicum chinense*

Origin: Atlantic Pepper Seeds (APS) breeding program

Heat: Super-Hot (800,000-1,000,000+ SHU, estimated)

Type: Purple-ripening 7 Pot variant

**Story**

The APS Purple 7-Pot Cross represents a stunning color mutation within the legendary 7 Pot pepper family, combining the extreme heat and distinctive pod morphology of the 7 Pot lineage with a rare purple coloration that signals peak ripeness and intense flavor development.

The '7 Pot' name originates from the Caribbean claim that a single pod contains enough heat to season seven pots of stew - a testament to its formidable capsaicin concentration. The purple variant likely emerged as a natural color mutation or selective breeding effort that preserved the heat and flavor while introducing anthocyanin pigments responsible for the deep purple hue.

What makes this variety particularly fascinating is the interplay between its visual appeal and its potent heat. The pods likely display the characteristic '7 Pot' shape - irregularly lobed, pimpled, and wrinkled - but with a color progression from green to deep purple, and possibly to red at peak ripeness. This coloration not only makes the variety visually striking but may also indicate a complex flavor profile, as anthocyanin-rich peppers often carry additional antioxidant compounds.

At an estimated 800,000-1,000,000+ SHU, the Purple 7-Pot Cross delivers an immediate, aggressive burn that spreads rapidly across the palate. Yet, like many 7 Pot varieties, it maintains a bright, fruity flavor profile with notes of citrus, pineapple, and tropical flowers. This balance makes it a favorite among hot sauce makers who want both intensity and complexity.

For gardeners, the APS Purple 7-Pot Cross offers the thrill of growing a true superhot with the bonus of its rare color. The plants are bushy and productive, reaching 3-4 feet with heavy branching. Full sun and warm conditions are essential, as the *chinense* species requires consistent heat for optimal fruit development.
